Proprioception (Deep Pressure)

Proprioception is our bodies awareness of position and movement. Muscles and joints detect proprioceptive input, when we push, pull, bend and stretch. Proprioceptive input has a calming and organising impact on the central nervous system and is therefore important in supporting regulation, focus and attention. A child that has difficulty processing proprioceptive input may have poor spatial awareness, frequently bump into objects, press too firmly or softly when writing, appear rough during play or hide in confined places or under objects. 

We receive proprioceptive input when we engage in heavy work activities or activities that apply deep pressure to muscles and joints. Heavy work activities involve using our muscles against resistance, such as pushing, pulling, or carrying weighted objects. A deep pressure activity may be receiving a cuddle or being wrapped in a blanket. The products in this range enable children to engage in heavy work or weighted activities.
