When parents think about hand strength, handwriting is often the first thing that comes to mind. While writing certainly relies on strong, coordinated hands, it's only one small part of the picture.

Children use their hands hundreds of times every day. They zip up jackets, open lunch boxes, build towers, fasten seatbelts, hold a paintbrush, peel stickers, turn book pages and play with friends. Each of these activities depends on grip strength, the small muscles within the hands, stable wrists and coordinated finger movements working together.

What if my child struggles with fine motor tasks?

On their own, these experiences aren't necessarily cause for concern. Every child develops at their own pace.
